Caring for Your Jewelry

Sterling silver and moissanite are hard-wearing, but a few habits keep a piece looking new.

Every day

  • Put your jewelry on last, after perfume, hairspray and cream. Those are what dull a stone.
  • Take it off before showering, swimming and sport. Chlorine and salt water are hard on silver.
  • Store each piece in its pouch, away from damp. Silver darkens faster in open air.

Cleaning

A soft dry cloth removes most marks and brings the shine back.

For a deeper clean, use lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap and a soft brush, then dry completely before putting the piece away.

Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and anything abrasive, including toothpaste and baking soda, which scratch silver permanently.

If your silver darkens

That is oxidation, not damage. It happens to all sterling silver, and it comes off.

A polishing cloth restores the finish in a minute.

Gold plating and pearl

Plating is a surface layer: rub it as little as possible and never use a polishing cloth on it.

Pearls are porous: wipe them with a slightly damp cloth only, and never soak them.
